granny squares

When mentioning crochet granny square is possibly the first thing that comes to everyone’s mind… well, granny squares and crochet doilies. I talk about lace on my crochet lace page, so if you are interested, please check it out.

Granny Squares are a wonderful way to learn and practice different techniques and create amazing pieces for crochet blankets that can then be treasured and used for years to come. They are easy to make and are quickly finished, so they are a great thing to do if you are not quite sure what type of crochet project you would like to do.. Any pattern or stitch can be made into a square generally, so really, possibilities are ENDLESS!!!

Another great aspect of a granny crochet square is it’s sociability. You can involve as few or as many people as you would like. Creating a family blanket is a great way of spending quality time together whilst also, at the end of the experience, you will have an actual product of your creativity, something to take home with you and remind you of the fun day you have spent together creating it. If you would like to make a granny square blanket as a present for the bride, CONTACT ME and we can see if a workshop can be arrange for you to have lots of fun with all the other bridesmaids…

Here are some examples of squares of all shapes and sizes, which have been created over number of years, using a wide variety of techniques… Victorian crochet leafs have been connected to create a sort of four leaf square and I am planning on exploring this technique further, so watch this space…

I have actually written a variation on the basic granny square crochet pattern which you can download from my RAVELRY store for free.

The Granny Square pattern has been part of my work in number of variations over the years. It seems to be one that is often featuring in my crochet work, see if you can spot it in my BLOG articles about my various BLANKETs and how they came to be. Read their stories of origin in the individual POSTS, or read about the importance of the crochet blanket as part of my work HERE.
