For those who come join me regularly, this one kinda directly follows the last one…. (blog post to blog post that is). For those who are joining for the first time: “Warm Welcome to you, and Nice to see you here.” If you so desire, read the previous post (FRACTAL FLUX) before or after continuing with this one. You do You!
I was ranting and raving a little in my previous post about how I cannot do crochet maths in my head. I cannot. No need to reopen that particular box and keep repeating the same thing.
HOW EVER…
As I was writing the aforementioned blog post about my third attempt at the hexagonal granny square-shaped jumper sulking in the basket, in a mutual sulk off with me…
IT HAPPENED.
As I was looking up links for the final edit of the post (very convoluted and rambled, it feels now, sorry, not sorry?), in the process of that ramble, the answer appeared.
YEY!
And so after I put the laptop away, finally happy to let FRACTAL FLUX flow into the future as its own separate part of one whole crochet blog story, I picked up the basket where the jumper lay….
And
We became friends again, started talking, and I actually finished the newly solved problem I had been arguing with the original user of the pattern about shortly afterwards.
WELL I NEVER!
Power or distraction? Maybe. Universal intervention? Who knows. There appear to be some things that happen to us exactly how they are meant to, without any conscious effort on our part. And that, THAT, is what is worth acknowledging today.
PATTERNS
There are patterns we are part of before we ever choose them. In fact, I believe, it is a natural way of the human brain to look out and spot patterns, to sort out chaos into patterns (HERE). now, this type of brain and emotional work can be pretty exhausting, and sometimes, for one reason or another, our brains are affected by other things which may be unkind to us and jump to patterns/ conclusions about ourselves, about others and about our environments which are tenuous at best, and not based in evidence/ factual information. This appears to be a sea-saw that is always there.
For me, and my creativity, and wider wellbeing, it is about the fine balance between organisation and chaos. Between pattern recognition, pattern following, habituation and pattern breaking caused by sheer boredom of the repetition…
How can one be both? One cannot, I suppose.
YES I CAN?
I titled this post because I wanted to touch on spirituality, values and structures, like ritual, for example, which can be instilled in us as we grow, when being a part of organised societies. Organisations calms our brains (HERE), habituation is preferred because it is more efficient and effective to preserve brain power and energy (HERE). And, as an organised person, I value systems, and one may say, overwork to make systems out of my very chaotic natural way of being and processing (lateral thinkers, I see you!).
AND
I find it very difficult to habituate anything, and the moment I do, I usually make a careless mistake, because I am bored and I have switched off… So, I am often both, ahead and behind, in any given moment, during any and most situations.
I KNOW. DON’T.
CROCHET PATTERNS
Say it with me: ‘The Creative Hook does not do patterns.’ I have said this, from various vantage points and today, without repeating myself, let us expand on the thought. I work and think as I do, I problem solve as I make, I can plan till I am blue in the face, as the saying goes, and it will still transpire differently once in my hands, once in flow, once in movement, once an item is being created, and once I have decided to adjust/ change/ add to yet another crochet pattern I am currently obsessed with following, stretching into its limits and recreating in my own unique way.
AND THAT’s OKAY!
So, maybe the balance is not to be able to sit in the middle, sit on the fence so to speak, because, as two people whose opinion I value say:
- It is a very uncomfortable place to sit.
- B) You would never make a decision at all.
Maybe for me, balance looks exactly like this. Flitting between pattern and chaos, left and right, from one to the other, hopefully listening to what my body/ mind/ soul needs at any particular time in space. Say it with me:
AND THAT’s OKAY <3
